Southview Vets Dental Services

The Southview Dental Service

We offer dental checks with our nurse to assess your pets’ teeth and give advice on how to achieve and maintain healthy mouths.

Dogs and cats don’t brush their teeth, leading to gum disease and tooth decay, which causes discomfort and pain. Pets can also break their teeth, either as a result of accidents or from bad habits, such a stone chewing. This often goes undetected due to their ability to hide even severe dental pain.

We use top-of-the-range IM3 air-driven dental equipment to remove plaque and tartar, as well as specialist instruments and techniques to remove painful or loose teeth.

Polishing is an important process that smooths the tooth surface making it more difficult for food and bacteria to adhere and therefore slows the recurrence of tartar.

Dental disease in dogs and cats

To prevent the associated pain and suffering of gingivitis (sore gums) we will sometimes recommend a scale and polish to remove a build up of plaque and tartar. This may prevent more complex dental requirements in the future such as extractions of teeth. Luckily, we are well equipped to assess and treat dental disease.

X-rays are important for assessing the health of your pet’s tooth roots and jaw bones. Unfortunately, many teeth can look healthy above the gum line, but have serious problems below the gum line. These conditions are painful for your pet, and could be missed without dental x-ray.
