Here at Southview Veterinary Hospital our aim is to optimise the life of pets by providing compassionate veterinary care to the highest standards and knowledge of preventative measures to ensure your pet lives life to its full potential.

Established in 2003 , Southview has a long standing history of treating pets with all forms of injuries and ailments. The practice has evolved greatly throughout the years to keep up with ever advancing veterinary technology and services. Today the practice is run by three partners, Alan Ahearne, Sarah Mitchell and Kevin Meaney who strive to provide outstanding care for our patients and their owners.

We use high quality equipment to aid us in diagnosing, treating and managing any issue that may arise throughout the life of a pet. Our staff are continuously advancing their medical and surgical knowledge to allow us to use the most up to date techniques to suit the needs of all individual patients.

We also specialise in canine reproduction and are passionate about providing a full service to breeders to ensure a healthy breeding regime is made possible in order to produce the next generation of genetically healthy puppies. We are the only veterinary establishment in Ireland offering the service of transcervical insemination using a camera guided scope.

Alan Ahearne

Senior Vet and Partner

Alan has been a member of the team at Southview since the very beginning. Over his time in Southview Alan has developed his skills in all small animal disciplines but in particular surgery and orthopaedics. He has recently completed the Harper Adams postgraduate certificate in small animal surgery in the UK.

Alan enjoys being involved in the management of the practice and strives for continuous progression and advancement which enables Southview to operate to the highest of standards.

His time outside of practice is spent with his family and working on the family farm. He enjoys golf, running and making the most of the great outdoors.

Sarah Mitchell – MVB

Senior Vet and Partner

Sarah has been a partner in Southview since 2003. She qualified in UCD in 1993 and went on to work in the U.K and Australia before eventually settling in Clonmel.

Sarah is a fundamental part of the small animal veterinary team here in Southview and specialises in Canine Reproduction.

Sarah and her family have three dogs called Bo,Ruffy and Bear along with a cat named Saphire. They enjoy getting out and about walking in the mountains and woodland that surround Clonmel.

 

Kevin Meaney – MVB CertDHH

Senior Vet and Partner

Kevin graduated from UCD in 2000 and came to Southview in 2002, having worked in various parts of the UK and Ireland. He became a partner in 2014.

Kevin enjoys a varied caseload, with a particular interest in small animal ultrasound, and is continuously exploring new ways it can be used to diagnose illness and monitor the health of pregnancies.

He also enjoys helping farmers improve the health their animals and in 2012 completed the Post-graduate certificate in Dairy Herd Health in UCD.

Kevin and Sarah-Jane have 2 dogs: Lady and Stan, 2 cats: Dan and Ziggy.

Deirdre Sheehan – MVB GPCert(Cardio)

Veterinary Surgeon and Cardiologist

Deirdre is originally from Co. Cork and graduated from UCD in 2010. As a new graduate, she worked in mixed practice in Co Monaghan for three years, before joining the team at Southview Veterinary Hospital in Clonmel in 2013.
After developing a special interest in treating cardiac patients, she completed her post graduate certificate in Small Animal Cardiology in 2019. She is a member of the European Society of Veterinary Cardiology as well as the UK’s Veterinary Cardiovascular Society with whom she has regularly attended international conferences. She has a special interest in echocardiography and chest ultrasound, but also enjoys emergency medicine and soft tissue surgery.
Deirdre and her husband have a lurcher, Lexi, and a whippet, Fuji, who may be two of the most spoiled dogs in Ireland!

Brian Hogg – DVM

Veterinary Surgeon

Brian qualified from SGGW in Warsaw, Poland in March 2017 and joined the Southview team in April of the same year. Having grown up on a suckler farm in Bansha, Co Tipperary Brian has a keen interest in Bovine reproduction, Herd Health and all types of surgery in both large and and small animal medicine. He also grew up with thoroughbred horses and is experienced in their care.

In his spare time he enjoys all types of sport especially GAA, Rugby, soccer and golf. He has two black Labradors – Shadow and Misty who he enjoys walking in the forestry around their home.

Sarah Barry – MVB

Veterinary Surgeon

Sarah joined the team in 2021 after graduating from UCD in June. She is our resident Kerry woman.  Her main interests in veterinary are exotics, wildlife and cats! She enjoys treating all our medical patients and also dips into surgical cases.  When  she gets home to Kerry, her 2 cats, Pudpud and Tiptoe, and her dog, Frodo, are delighted to see her home.  She is enjoying developing her veterinary knowledge every day.

Jane Jones

Practice Manager

Jane joined our administration team in September of 2016 and became Practice Manager in 2021. Prior to this she lived and worked in Australia.

She spent five years working for the Animal League of Queensland in a public animal hospital as Practice Manager. Jane has always been a compassionate animal lover.

Amy Fox RVN

Head Veterinary Nurse

Amy has been part of the Southview team since 2007.  She is the friendly face many of our clients have come to know.  Amy oversees the day to day care of the patients that come through our doors and ensures each and every one of them receives Gold Standard Care.

Amy has a particular love for cats, opening her own cattery in 2012, but has always had dogs in her life.  She has lots of pets at home including her dog Dora, 6 cats, and 2 rabbits called Mr. Sprinkles and Cookie!

Aoife Whelan RVN

Reproduction Specialist and Veterinary Nurse

Having completed the BSc in Veterinary Nursing in DKIT in 2017 Aoife joined the full time nursing team here in Southview.

Aoife grew up working in kennels and always had a passion for dogs which lead her to a career in nursing. She has a particular interest in canine reproduction and neonatal care and is always updating her knowledge on the topics.

Outside of work Aoife has two cats and also likes to take her three dogs out hiking.

 

Leonie Barry

Veterinary Physiotherapist

Leonie qualified as a registered veterinary nurse in 2016 who then went on to study a 2yr diploma course in the UK in Veterinary Physiotherapy. She is particularly interested in the rehabilitation and recovery of animals post surgery.  

Leonie is also a member of the international association of animal therapists, which promotes annual CPD and upholds a professional code of conduct.  She is continuously updating her knowledge and approach to different treatments through a range of courses allowing her to give a top quality service to all our  canine patients.  See the physiotherapy section of our website for more info!

 

Senior Nurses

Amanda, Melissa & Edel

Amanda joined our team in 2020.  She graduated in 2009 from Veterinary Technician Institute in Houston Texas.  She previously worked in emergency care and is now one of our Surgical Nurses. Amanda has recently welcomed a beautiful puppy, Ryn, to her family. She is also a proud owner to Magnus, her cat.

Melissa joined the team in 2012.  She took a year out to work as a veterinary nurse in Bermuda and returned in 2020. Melissa is currently completing a Certificate in Anaesthesia and is the go-to for any injured wildlife queries! She is also known as the cat whisperer in work and has three cats at home, Mitzy, Fudge and Katniss.

Edel joined the team more recently, in 2021.  She graduated as an RVN from AIT in 2016.  Edel completed the Fear Free Programme in 2019. She is mainly focused with our Reproduction Services and has a keen interest in medical nursing also.

Junior Nurses

Amy and Fiona

Amy joined team in 2018 as a student in Animal Care. She completed her course in Veterinary Nursing in St Johns College, Cork,  in 2020.  At home, Amy has Poppy, her dog, and 2 cats Betty and Flossie. She loves Medical Nursing but is involved in all areas of patient care.

Fiona joined us in late 2020 after qualifying as a veterinary nurse from St Johns College also that year. She has a cat called Rat at home. Her main interests in veterinary are Radiography and caring for our feline patients.  She hopes to further her training in veterinary cytology.

Kennel Assistants

Claire and Catherine

Claire joined our team in 2019. She has completed Level 5 Animal Care, a course in Canine Behaviour, Animal Reiki and is currently studying Feline Behaviour and Psychology. Claire is our resident hedgehog lover. At home, Claire has Daisy (her dog), Kitty and Dora (her cats), Bennet the zebrafinch and Tiger the fish!

Cat joined our team in 2021.  She has also completed Level 5 Animal Care.  Previously she has volunteered at animal rescue centres.  Cat is interested in progressing to veterinary nursing and homeopathic therapies for pets in the near future. Cat has 2 dogs, Polly and Jake.

Receptionists

Noreen & Caoimhe

Noreen is the friendly face you see everyday in reception.  She joined our team in 2020.  She has 2 chihuahuas, Zumo and Bella, and many horses at home that keeps her busy on her days off.  Noreen keeps our shelves well stocked as head of Purchasing Department.

Caoimhe joined our team in 2020. She is part of our reception team and also a huge dog lover.  She has two dogs at home, Holly and Toby.

Administration Team

Liza, Sheenagh & Geraldine

Liza joined our accounts department in 2021. She loves going home to her very spoilt cats Lucky and Misty in the evenings and is a huge cat lover!

Sheenagh joined our team in 2021. She will be seen regularly on reception but is the go-to for any Pet Insurance Claims!  Sheenagh has a fabulous boxer X mastiff called Pamela Olive!  She is always the best dressed person in the building!

Geraldine joined the Southview team in 2020 and is the friendly face all our farmers will recognise from our Large Animal Office.  Some of our large animal customer may have already met her dog Bandit as he loves to come to work with her. She also has her two ponies at home, Lui and Rizzle

Student Veterinary Nurses

Kayleigh and Emily

Kayleigh joined our team in 2018 and has returned to college this year to complete her Veterinary Nursing Course in St Johns College, Cork.  Kayleigh loves being involved in many sports in her spare time and walking her dog, Seamie.

Emily joined us in 2020 when she began her studies to become a veterinary nurse. She is in her final year of her course this year and looks forward to becoming a qualified registered Veterinary Nurse next summer.

The two girls are here every Monday and Tuesday as part of their work experience program and also work part time with us at the weekends.
