New Puppy Information

Vaccinations and Boosters:

All dogs need an initial vaccination course of two injections and then annual boosters. These are protection for your dog from diseases carried by other dogs and a disease carried by rats. Your dog will be vaccinated against Parvovirus, Distemper, Canine Hepatitis and Leptospirosis. Your dog is not fully protected unless he gets a booster every year.

Kennel Cough:

We recommend that if your dog is going into kennels you get him vaccinated for kennel cough 2-3 weeks before going away. As there has been an increase in the number of patients suffering from kennel cough we would suggest having your animal vaccinated against this illness routinely.

Worming:

Puppies need to be wormed every 2 weeks from birth until 12 weeks old and then monthly until they are six months old. Adult dogs need to be wormed every 3 months.

Micro-chipping:

If you want extra security for your dog if he gets lost or stolen you may want to consider getting your dog microchipped. It is a simple straightforward procedure that we can do during a consultation. Most puppies are microchipped by breeders now and we can scan your pup for you and help you make sure you are his registered owner. The cost of micro-chipping is 32euro.

Pet Insurance:

More of our dog and cat owners are getting their animals insured now, to help with costs should their pet become injured or sick. We recommend that you consider this and if you want any more information to talk to one of our veterinary nurses.

Neutering:

If you want your dog neutered we can neuter male from six months of age and females from six months o age.

Teeth:

Dental hygiene is important for your dog. They can suffer from dental plaque and tartar, gum disease and bad breath just like us. Dry diets are usually better from your dog’s teeth than tinned food, but if your dog prefers tinned food than you can brush their teeth to prevent dental problems. We have a selection of dry diets for puppies and dogs in stock. We also have a product called logic oral hygiene gel which is the same as mouth wash for dogs. As dogs get older and have dental disease we can de-scale and polish their teeth to prevent gum disease and loose teeth.

Fleas and Ear Mites:

We can check your pets ears whilst they are being examined by vets or under general anaesthetic. Ear mites are common in dogs and cats and can be easily treated with ear drops or an application of stronghold. If you are concerned that your puppy may have fleas please ask the veterinary surgeon or nurse to check for you and we can treat them while they are in being treated.
